Today's actuators, even the state-of-the-art ones, are still largely made from metals, hard plastics and electronics. But there are other ideas around. Tolley and his colleagues have been working on a very different approach.
During the Chávez presidency, Venezuela reclassified its reserves. Previously, there were thought to be just 80 billion barrels of extractable oil, but by 2011, its reported figure had nearly quadrupled. That statistical change was made possible by high oil prices at the time, which allowed previously unviable projects to look feasible.

The reshuffle comes at a critical juncture for LVMH in China. In its full-year 2025 results, the group reported revenue of 80.81 billion euros, down 4.6% year on year. Recurring operating profit fell 9% to 17.76 billion euros, while net profit declined 13% to 10.88 billion euros.
